I’m teaching a class called Experiments with Technology in the Parsons BFADT program this semester, and it’s given me a chance to reacquaint myself with Processing. These are the latest in a series of new work using the open-source programming environment that first got me interested in creative interaction.

Tanzania Vlog

In June I travelled to Tanzania on an International Budget Project fellowship to work with Policy Forum, a group of NGOs in Tanzania that work to promote transparency in government.

The core focus of my work was to develop open-source solutions for communication design, as well as to foster open communications amongst member organizations using wireless technologies.

Digital Puppetry — Now on Display at Eyebeam

Digital Puppetry, a project I collaborated on with artist Tine Papendick and all-around digital genius Rory Solomon on, is now on display at Eyebeam Atelier, in Chelsea through August 9 as part of the Interactivos exhibition.

The project uses Computer Vision with OpenCV to allow viewers to attach digital accessories to their images in real-time.

Switch Google to English (or any other language)

How to switch google to english

okay maybe this is a simple thing, but it has been driving me nuts while I’m in Tanzania…

step one: go here
http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=EN

*edit*
this should work, but doesn’t really. What you need to do is a Firefox hack i found here.

What you need to do is to paste this:

<Param name=”hl” value=”en”/>

into the google.xml file in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins. Its a little tricky, and if it doesn’t take, you’ll have no google search box in firefox, but it works.

Another workaround is to simply search from here:

http://www.google.co.il/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hl=en

to force the language on google.

To use other languages, you simply use one of the IOS 639-1 language codes instead of “en”.

Phlock

Phlock is an interactive installation that allows viewers to sequence sounds and create music using the emergent behavior of digital creatures.

Phlock is on display at the Chelsea Art Museum until June 8, 2008

New Dart Art

Created New Art for my Augmented Dart Game thesis project. The previous characters were “cute”, and user testing showed that teens related to them, but the focus got away from the emergent behaviour, which is the core of the game. Now focussing on creating a more cohesive system, where the creatures relate visually with their environment. And they’re prettier.

LASER tagging City Hall

Went out with Evan Roth and the Toronto GRL crew the other night and wrote up some TO-centric stuff on City Hall. My taunting the Toronto Transit Commission got picked up in the article by blogTO.

Forward Kinematics for Animating Hand-Drawn Art.

Built an applet for testing out the character art for the Augmented Dart Game project. This allows the cells to morph and move around specified joints and armatures, while retaining their hand-drawn aesthetic.

Getting Ready for FITC

Getting ready for FITC Toronto 2008… I’ll be talking about my design of Satirical Interfaces, and will be doing a demonstration of the Terror Cell Mixed Reality game technology.

Hope to see you there…

ARToolkit tricking

I’ve been messing around with ARToolkit for use in designing a trick for Marco Tempest. Here we have an augmented reality cone.
